2024 Ohio River Sweep Statistics

Ohio River Sweep season occurred from March 1st-October 31st, 2024. Litter clean up events took place throughout the Ohio River Basin across the six states that border the Ohio River. The Ohio River Sweep season allows for flexibility in choosing the date, time, and location of each clean up event.

In 2024:

  • 125 Sweeps were hosted in six states.
  • 4,267 people attended a River Sweep event.
  • 180,600 pounds of litter were collected (estimated weight), and 996 tires were removed.

2023 Ohio River Sweep Statistics

Ohio River Sweep season occurred from March 1st-October 31st, 2023. Litter clean up events took place throughout the Ohio River Basin across the six states that border the Ohio River. The Ohio River Sweep season allows for flexibility in choosing the date, time, and location of each clean up event.

In 2023:

  • 121 Sweeps were hosted in six states.
  • 4,471 people attended a River Sweep event.
  • 168,020 pounds of litter were collected (estimated weight), and 902 tires were removed.

2022 Ohio River Sweep Statistics

Ohio River Sweep season occurred from March 1st-October 31st, 2022. Litter clean up events took place throughout the Ohio River Basin across the six states that border the Ohio River. The Ohio River Sweep season allows for flexibility in choosing the date, time, and location of each clean up event.

In 2022:

  • 112 Sweeps were hosted in six states.
  • 5,146 people attended a River Sweep event.
  • 156,060 pounds of litter were collected (estimated weight).

2021 Ohio River Sweep Statistics

During 2021, the Ohio River Sweep responded to the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and creatively redesigned the Ohio River Sweep with many small events in multiple locations in the Ohio River Watershed. These River Sweep events provided an opportunity for small groups to make a big impact on waterways in their community.

In 2021:

  • 150 Mini-Sweeps were hosted in five states – 6 times greater than the cleanups held in 2020!
  • 1,500 people attended a River Sweep event.
  • 50,000 pounds of litter were collected (estimated weight).
