Diatoms

Diatoms are a common type of algae possessing cells made of silica. These organisms are sensitive to environmental stressors and changes in water quality therefore their assemblages can be used to characterize past and present aquatic conditions. Periphytic (i.e. attached to a substrate) diatoms were collected from the littoral zones of the Ohio River at select locations. More information regarding collection methods are available upon request.
